Money Talks. What Is It Saying?

Mitt Romney is running way behind in the Republican ’08 polls but, in the first quarter of the year, has raised $23 million, far more than those who have a better chance of getting the nomination.

“People are having a positive reaction to him and are willing to open a vein for him,” says a professor at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Right, and the Tooth Fairy loves him, too.

In politics, Big Money is about access and influence. What the $23 million is saying is that, although Giuliani and McCain have a better chance of winning, Romney is a safer investment. Who knows how pliable mavericks like the front runners will be? By comparison, Romney is a sure thing.

On the Democratic side, there is no such ambivalence. Hillary Clinton is looking good on being both electable and available.
