Scaling Mt. Bush

The ten men starting their assault on the White House tonight will be standing tall in California but figuratively ducking and weaving as they come under fire climbing the mountain of rage, resentment and disapproval that George Bush has built up between them and their objective.

John McCain, by his straight talk and side trip to Baghdad, is positioned to attack with the least evasive action but Sam Brownback, Rudy Giuliani, Jim Gilmore, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo and Tommy Thompson will have to do some fancy footwork to avoid crossfire from The Base and sane voters who have had enough of Iraq.

They will no doubt try to advance behind a smokescreen of their Reaganesque conservative credentials, finessing the war issue with holier-than-thou affirmations of loyalty to the President, praising his moral courage but letting slip little hints about “reassessing” the situation after the stunning success of The Surge.

Only Fred Thompson, sitting safely in his undeclared bunker, will escape unscathed, free to come out tomorrow night in Orange County and help finish off some of the wounded by collecting ammunition from the party’s big contributors.
