Tonight’s white-tie dinner at the White House will take place over George Bush’s resistance. "We did sort of have to convince him a little bit," The First Lady told reporters about her efforts, along with Condoleeza Rice, to get Dubya to agree to all that formality.
Oddly, Bush may actually have a point this time. The most memorable moment in royal visits to the U.S. came in 1939 when FDR entertained Queen Elizabeth’s parents and served them hot dogs on a silver platter.
The Queen’s mother asked President Roosevelt, “How do you eat it?”
“Very simple,” FDR answered. “Push it into your mouth and keep pushing it until it’s all gone.”
The King smothered the hot dog with mustard and devoured it “with gusto,” ending up with mustard on his pants.
No hot dogs or blue jeans tonight. The White House will be serving Seared Baby Sea Bass with Ramp-Vermouth Sauce and Lemony Risotto. The Queen will know how to eat it.
