Spider-Man is giving Americans what George W. Bush has failed to deliver. As a result, Bush’s approval ratings have hit an all-time low, while grosses for Spider-Man 3 are breaking records.
Both action figures came to power after character transformations, but Bush has failed to match the feats of the Super-hero who is now slated for three more sequels while the President is in his penultimate lame-duck year.
It may come down to production values. Spider-Man’s producers have provided more pizzazz in battling the Green Goblin et al than Rove and Cheney have mustered in the fight against Evil all over the world.
Then again, it may have to do with attention span. Spider-Man has to bring us to the edge of our seats for only a couple of hours while Bush has kept us in terrified suspense for more than six years.
We may just have overdosed on political popcorn.
