Saving the World Is Too Expensive

The good news is we can avoid being destroyed by global warming. The bad news: The United States and China are not sure we can afford it.

A new study by 2,000 scientists concludes it’s possible to head off a sharp rise in temperatures that could wipe out species, raise ocean levels and trigger droughts in some places and flooding in others.

Accomplishing that, the UN report says, will require cuts in emissions through increasing energy efficiency, a shift from fossil fuels to renewable fuels and changes in how forestry and farming now operate.

The report was approved today by delegates from 120 countries, but the U.S. and Chinese representatives are worried that such measures would curtail economic growth.

Sounds reasonable. If we can’t keep getting richer, what’s the point of not freezing and being flooded?
