With the baseball season under way, there is a temptation to see everything in terms of the national pastime, including politics. So how’s this for a mid-season trade: Hagel for Lieberman?
When the veto game heats up, the Senate putz, an Independent caucusing with the Democrats, may make a sanctimonious switch and put the Republicans back in charge “for the good of the country” and the glory of Joe.
When that happens, the ball will be in Hagel’s court, to mix sports metaphors. Knowing Republicans will never nominate him, he has been considering running for President as an Independent.
Feeling as strongly about ending the war as Lieberman does about prolonging it, Hagel could declare himself an Independent, caucus with the Democrats and save their control.
Unlikely? Yes, but this is a year when, as in the Lotto commercial where a winner buys a team and plays third base, New York’s billionaire Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, may put himself in the game. Who bats next?
